In the morning you will be taken by your Tour guide to Demre, It will take about 1 hour 20 minutes drive from Antalya and our first stop is Church of Saint Nicholas in Demre. At the entrance there is a rather incongruous statue of the Saint in the persona of Santa Claus complete with sack of presents and a mob of children. The tomb of St.Nicholas, or Santa Claus is housed in a well preserved 4th century Byzantine Basilica the Saint better known to Turks as Noel Baba. In 1087 thieves plundered Santa’s Tomb eascaping to Bari in Italy with the bones and funny red cap.
Today the burial chapel in the basilica houses his simple marble sarcophagus that is located in a small niche with st. Nicholas pictured on the wall above his sarcophagus, and on every 6th december which is the saint’s birthday is celebrated with a three day festival and symposium. After the St. Nicholas Basilica we will drive over to Myra Ancient Site, the remains of myra naturally fall into three distinct zones with the first been on the South west and includes the theatre the so-called sea necropolis and the area is occupied by the agora. The second can be found in the North which covers the acropolis its buildings and its walls, the third and final is on the South east - the river necropolis and channel which supplied Myra with water. The theatre of Myra was destroyed by the earthquake that devastated the city in AD 141, and in Myra you will be able to see The Painted Tomb as it is one of the most remarkable in Lycia, when visited by Charles Fellows in the 19C its reliefs still bore traces of yellow, red, blue and purple paint.
After lunch we will drive to Ucagiz port for Kekova and Simena. This a popular day excursion from Ucagiz is the boat trip to Kekova, it is a partially submerged Lycian city. During the hellenistic period there was a considerable increase in maritime trade between the cities of Lycia and other parts of the Greek world, unfortunately this was paralleled by a marked increase in piracy and as a result islands like Kekova were fortified and became both refuges in times of danger and advance warning post for cities on mainland. As it skirts shoreline the boat glides over the remains of the buildings, stairs and pavements which are clearly visible under the water. Just near Kekova there are several islets whose shaved and sculptured outlines betray the fact that they were used as sources of Stone by ancient builders. When the tour has finished your Kekova Simena and Myra And St. Nicholas Tour guide will return you to your pick up point. You can take a Private Kekova Simena and Myra And St. Nicholas Tour where you can be picked up by your Antalya Tour guide at your convienence or a Kekova Simena and Myra And St.Nicholas Group tour, where your Antalya Tour guide will pick you up at approx 08.00 / 09:00 hours for your Tour from Antalya.
