Edirne Jewish Heritage Tour From Istanbul

Tour Code: ISTDAILYP123 | Private Tours | Duration: 10 hours | Departure: Everyday

Highlights: Edirne City, Edirne Synagogue, The Archeology and Etnography Museum, Rustem Pasa Caravanserai

itinerary

You will be picked up from Istanbul Airport, your Istanbul hotel, Istanbul Marina, or even the cruise ship port in Istanbul. Your Edirne Jewish Heritage tour guide will hold up a sign with your name, making it easy to find your designated tour bus. The tour lasts approximately 10 hours, and afterward, we will drive you back to your Istanbul hotel, Istanbul Marina, Istanbul Airport, or Istanbul harbor in Turkey.

The departure from Istanbul will be in the morning by a vehicle. Edirne (Adrianopolis), the second capital city of the Ottoman Empire, has a rich history. Refounded in 125 A.D. by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, it played a crucial role as the gateway from Europe to the East. Serving as the Ottoman Empire's capital for almost a century, Edirne boasts historically and architecturally significant buildings, including mosques, religious complexes, bridges, old bazaars, caravanserais, and palaces. The Jewish Community of Ottoman Edirne was one of the most important thriving communities in the Ottoman state.

The tour begins with a visit to Kaleici, known for its wooden houses and structures, followed by stops at the Clock Tower and Castle ruins. The Clock Tower, once an arsenal, became the Nation’s Clock after renovations. Castle ruins, part of the Edirne Palace, provide insight into the city's historical significance. Another highlight is the Edirne Synagogue, an abandoned synagogue built in 1907 with a capacity of 1,200 worshipers.

Before lunch, explore the Archaeology and Ethnography Museum, tracing the area's history from prehistoric to Byzantine times. The last stop before lunch is the Grand Bazaar of Edirne, where you have an hour of free time. Try local specialties like Ciger Tava (Fried Liver) or Edirne Meatballs. After lunch, visit Rustem Pasa Caravanserai, Sarayici, and Uzunkopru (Long Bridge) to see the longest stone bridge in Turkey.

At the end of the journey, you will be transferred to your starting points.
