Afterwards we will then drive to the Antalya City center and besure that we will not miss the Tophane Cay Bahcesi (Tea Garden) along the way, its located on top of the rampart walls that overlook the harbour. Then its on to the Republic Square and the old city entrance where you will see the red-tinted Fluted Minaret (Yivli Minare), that dates all the way from the 13’th century and virtually is the symbol of Antalya city, on your right side you will see the Clock Tower in front which is a fascinating. After we will then go to visit the Old Town of Antalya where we will be able to explore the Tekeli Mehmet Pasa Mosque, just a short distance along and to the right is Hadrian’s Gate that was built to commemorate the Emperor’s visit to Antalya in AD 130 its construction is made from marble and it has three arches that all have coffered ceilings that have been decorated with rosettes. Behind Hadrian’s Gate is the Old Town – A maze of small narrow winding streets which makes up the old quarter, here you can see the overhanging the wooden balconies of old dilapidated houses lean companionable towards each other like in ancient gossips exchanging the latest scandal, sometimes through a gap in a crumbling wall you can catch a glimpse of an overgrown garden where a few neglected orange trees produced shrivelled, bitter fruits. As we are walking around in the old town of Antalya you will see Kesik Minaret Mosque (broken Minaret) and the ruined mosque beside it was transformed from Byzantine Church by Seljuks, at the far end of the city is Hidirlik Tower which is situated on the sea front with magnificent views of all over the city and the gulf of Antalya, there is also the chance to see the rugged Taurus Mountains in the background. After you have soaked in the sights of around Antalya you will then be given some free time (approx 1 hour) so you can stroll at your leisure or relax have some refreshments in the cafeteria. When we all meet back up we will then drive to have our lunch as afterwards we will be visiting the Waterfalls – Antalya is known for its spectacular waterfalls. The next place for take you to explore is Perge Ancient Site that has an extensive amount of remains so it is very easy to imagine what a life must have been like in this once prosperous town with over 100.000 inhabitants. The Perge stadium which seated a crowd of 12.000 has a wall at the far end that was meant to protect spectators during the wild beast fights that took place here, just against the opposite hill is a impressive Theater with its features finely rendeed reliefs of Dionysus, entering through the Roman gate you will see a large Agora to your rightside, and up ahead are two imposing Hellenistic Towers that mark the beginning of the long colonnaded avenue leading to the Nymphaeum, just behind is the Roman Public Bath dating from the 3C AD. After you have seen all of Perge Ancient site we will drive over to Aspendos Ancient Site, as its here that has the most perfectly preserved theatre in the Roman world. The estimated capacity of theater is 15.000 though in recent years more than 40.000 have been squeezed in to see Turkish wrestling and song contests. The most interesting monument to be found in Aspendos is of course the Aqueduct, it was this aqueduct that brought water from the Isaurian Mountains in to the North it has tremendous engineering construction. The remaining sections consists of an arched structure 880m long and 15m high which carried the limestone water pipes and two pressure towers. As the day starts to close in we will make our last stop to visit the Seljuk bridge that goes over Koprucay (Eurymedon) and dates from the 13’th century AD, this bridge is still used to this day and it was this bridge that replaced a 2C Roman bridge whose ruins may be seen in the river-bed just a few metres to the North. A tentative reconstruction of the 5m wide Roman bridge whose central span was 9m above the water so it shows that large ships could have passed underneath it on their way to the docks. In relation to its Seljuk successor it was a veritable giants. As the day comes to a close it also means it is the end of your tour around Antalya, Perge and Aspendos so we will then return you back to your pick up point. We trust that your time with us discovering and exploring some of Turkeys hidden treasures has been everything that you wanted and more, we would also like to wish you a pleasant journey home and shall look forward to seeing you again on one of our many other time travelling packages.
