You will be picked up from Istanbul airport, your hotel, Istanbul Marina, or the cruise ship port in Istanbul. Your Iznik tour guide will hold up a sign with your name for easy identification. The Iznik tour is approximately 8 hours, and afterward, you will be driven back to your Istanbul hotel, Istanbul Marina, Istanbul airport, or Istanbul harbor in Turkey.
The journey begins in the morning with a transfer across the Sea of Marmara by ferry. Our first destination is the charming town on the coast of Lake Askania, Iznik (Nicaea). This town is renowned for hosting the first Ecumenical Council in 325 AD, a historically significant event that marked the development of technical Christology. Iznik was also the temporary capital of the Byzantine Empire when Constantinople was captured by the Latins. The town's center is surrounded by well-preserved Roman and Byzantine walls, with remarkable ruins of the St. Sophia Temple and an intriguing monument, the Green Mosque.
Our visit includes the St. Sophia Cathedral, which served as the seat of the Second Ecumenical Council, boasting beautiful mosaic pavements and frescoes. We'll explore the ancient City Walls, dating back to the 4th century, with remnants of old hammams and mosques. The Green Mosque, adorned with green tiles on its minaret, is another highlight. You'll have an hour of free time for relaxation or to enjoy refreshments and lunch at the cafeteria, where you must try the famous Iznik Meatball.
After lunch, our itinerary takes us to the Iznik Archaeological Museum, housing a historic collection of tiles and antiques from Roman times. The tour concludes with a ferry ride back to Istanbul, where you'll be transferred to your starting point.
